Protecting Global Travelers with New Security Solutions

Baltimore, MD (May 6, 2010) -- When Abigail Jones left to complete an internship at an orphanage in Honduras last summer, she did not anticipate getting caught in a political coup. But when the Honduran president was removed from office and soldiers took control of the town, barricading the orphanage for safety, Jones knew it was time to come home. Her mother contacted MEDEX Global Solutions, a leading international travel, medical and security assistance provider, for help.

MEDEX Global Solutions is dedicated to helping individuals like Jones. More than 20 million travelers and expatriates are protected by its programs, which are offered through businesses, schools, insurance companies, and affiliations. Jones was protected through her university's program.

MEDEX Global Solutions' security teams quickly assessed Jones' situation. On-the-ground resources were reporting that public transportation was not safe and there was a strong military presence in the area. While the Tegucigalpa airport was operating, getting to the airport could pose a problem.

During political turmoil, situations like Jones' are common. Most assistance companies will pay transportation costs to evacuate travelers from a designated departure point, such as an airport. In these situations, it is incumbent on the traveler to get to that departure point on his or her own if the assistance company does not have security capabilities of their own.

MEDEX Global Solutions has always helped our clients in getting to the departure point. But now, depending on the plan selected, we will bear the cost of that transportation.

"This is a significant difference from our competitors," says Charlie LeBlanc, president of ASI Group, the security arm of MEDEX Global Solutions. "Often, as in the case of Abigail Jones, getting to the departure point is the most difficult and dangerous part of a security evacuation."

MEDEX Global Solutions arranged for a reputable security-trained driver and an additional escort agent to pick up Jones from the orphanage. With her escorts, Jones safely made it to the airport. The driver and agent remained with Jones and then stayed at the airport until they were certain that her flight had taken off. Within a few hours, Jones was home safely in Alabama.

In addition to protecting travelers like Jones, MEDEX Global Solutions now uses its own security analysts to determine the best time to evacuate from a situation. "We found that we often want to get our travelers out even before the State Department announces an evacuation," says LeBlanc. "Of course, we will always defer to a traveler's home government, but frequently, we will evacuate prior to any government declaration."

MEDEX Global Solutions clients may also now receive security email notifications, paid evacuations for natural disasters, and the ability to choose their preferred hospital during a medical evacuation. This integration of medical and security programs help protect MEDEX Global Solutions clients with any type of situation they may encounter abroad.

CMI Insurance Launches New Website to Protect Students and International Travelers

Baltimore, MD (Feburary 9, 2010)

Baltimore, MD (Feburary 9, 2010) - CMI Insurance, a part of MEDEX Global Solutions, launched a newly redesigned website last Monday to allow easier access for study abroad participants and international travelers to purchase international medical insurance services. The redesigned website (www.cmi-insurance.com ) provides more information in a clear format, allowing travelers to make educated decisions about international insurance programs and administrators to understand the breadth of services offered by the MEDEX Global Solutions companies. These services include online medical and security intelligence, emergency medical evacuations, in-house security assistance, and many other capabilities that address the growing concerns of international program administrators.

"The redesign of the website allows for students to easily purchase their policy online," says Linda Fallon, president of CMI Insurance. "It also speaks to parents and administrators who may have questions about student travel medical insurance."

The new website has sections for study abroad and exchange program administrators, students, parents, and leisure travelers. Visitors looking for individual programs can quickly identify their options and purchase a program designed specifically for them. Administrators researching blanket programs for student groups will learn about CMI's parent company, MEDEX Global Solutions, and the comprehensive solution, which provides medical insurance, evacuation services, online medical and security intelligence, security assistance, and much more.

"We are proud to present this website to our clients," says Fallon. "This is just the first of many steps we are taking to keep CMI Insurance and MEDEX Global Solutions' scholastic clients and travelers better informed about the services available to them."

Baltimore, MD (January 26, 2010)

Bruce Kirby, president and CEO of MEDEX Global Group, announced the addition of three new regional sales directors to the MEDEX team. John Pugh will service the Western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, Stephen Rullo will be responsible for US Agency for International Development (USAID) and non-governmental organization (NGO) sales, and Chip Sousa will manage sales in MEDEX’s scholastic division.

“We are strengthening our sales team to target specific industries and locations,” says Kirby. “This enables us to reach more potential clients and ultimately help more travelers than ever before.”

Pugh has extensive experience in the international marketplace. He comes to MEDEX from Shepell-fgi, the major provider of global employee assistance program services, and he previously spent 12 years as a sales director for a major MEDEX competitor. Early in his career, Pugh was an IBM international account manager, where he managed the global responsibility for clients such as Bank of America, DHL, Matson Navigation, The Harper Group and several cruise lines.

Pugh has employed his international expertise in more than 25 different countries. He received his undergraduate degree from Jacksonville University, attended Northwestern University Kellogg School Executive Management Program and earned a teaching credential at Dominican University.

Rullo most recently served as a director of sales within WellPoint’s Consumer Health Solutions business unit. Like Pugh, Rullo also worked for a major MEDEX competitor, as well as The Coca-Cola Company.

Rullo’s travels have taken him to Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, Vietnam and the United Kingdom. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California – Berkeley and is currently obtaining his master’s in business administration at Villanova University.

Sousa has more than 10 years of experience in health and financial services. For the past six years, Sousa was an account executive at Aetna Student Health, where he successfully sold and implemented many student health insurance programs.

“John [Pugh], Steve [Rullo], and Chip [Sousa] are excellent additions to the MEDEX sales team,” comments Kirby. “With their experience and tenacity, along with the dedication of our other regional sales directors, MEDEX is positioned for optimal growth in 2010 and beyond.”

In Earthquake Aftermath, Response Time is Critical: How MEDEX Global Solutions Protected Clients and Travelers

Baltimore, MD (January 22, 2010)

Within 17 minutes of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake striking Port-au-Prince, Haiti, MEDEX Global Solutions, a leader in the travel assistance industry, had notified clients of the event. Medical and security teams in Baltimore, Maryland, and Houston, Texas, were quickly assessing the situation, contacting on-the-ground resources and providing advice and guidance to clients who had travelers and expatriates in Haiti.

Time is crucial in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster. “Our first goal was to get the most accurate information as quickly as possible,” says Bruce Kirby, President and CEO of MEDEX Global Solutions. “We needed to carefully evaluate the situation, so we could provide sound advice to our clients and their travelers.”

While some organizations and travelers wanted to leave the country to return home to safety, many MEDEX Global Solutions clients were trying to get into Port-au-Prince to help. Major news networks, relief agencies and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) organizations turned to the travel assistance company for aircraft, food and water, and other supplies. To provide on-the-ground medical, security and logistical assistance, MEDEX Global Solutions had seven individuals, including a MEDEX Physician Advisor, operating from Haiti.

Despite the initial shutdown of Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint L’Ouverture International Airport, MEDEX Global Solutions transported several high-profile clients into the city less than 12 hours after the earthquake. “Our teams worked all night to make secure transportation arrangements,” says Charlie LeBlanc, President of ASI Group, the security division of MEDEX Global Solutions. “With our help, these clients were able to obtain the first video footage for a major news organization.”

In the initial aftermath of the earthquake, MEDEX Global Solutions had 10 aircraft, consisting of two Jetstream 32 twin-engine turboprops with 19-seat capacity, six Bell 206 helicopters and two Learjet air ambulances, on stand-by or actively transporting people into and out of Haiti. Within 48 hours, the company had moved 94 rescue workers, emergency responders and members of the press into Port-au-Prince. By the morning of Friday, January 15, several clients who had been affected by the earthquake were transported to nearby safe havens. As clients continue to travel in and out of the country, MEDEX Global Solutions’ on-the-ground resources provide food, water and fuel to clients in Port-au-Prince.

Overall, MEDEX Global Solutions provided assistance to more than 800 travelers and expatriates affected by the earthquake. “Unfortunately, we still have several individuals who passed away or are missing,” says Kirby. “While we hope for the best, we are actively working to locate them and bring their remains home to their families.”

In addition to the logistical, medical and security support, MEDEX Global Solutions has promised financial support. The company is matching employee contributions to relief organizations. “We are proud to be a part of the relief missions sponsored by our clients, and this is just one more way to support them,” adds Kirby.

Don't Sacrifice Your Well-being in a Discount Destination

MEDEX Advises Travelers to Prepare for Unexpected Financial, Health, and Security Risks in Exotic Locales

Baltimore, MD (Vocus/PRWEB) March 31, 2009 -- American travelers who continue travel spending in a down economy should prepare for unexpected medical and security situations that could wipe out any money saved on their bargain vacation. Old and new destinations offering steep discounts may carry risks that travelers won't find advertised.

"In many small islands and less-developed countries medical care is below international standards," warns Linda McGee, President of MEDEX Insurance Services. "Coupled with high disease risks and unyielding costs for emergency evacuation, unprepared travelers could face expenses that more than outweigh any discount obtained during booking."

Since the beginning of the year, MEDEX has experienced notable increases in traveler medical assistance cases for high-risk destinations. "Our cases for Peru have doubled compared to this same time period last year," explains McGee, "And this is in a country where there is a current outbreak of Dengue Fever - a very serious medical threat."

Other locations such as Mexico - commonly accepted as a great value due to the strength of the U.S. dollar - are suffering from concerns over security and political instability. Medical emergencies can often be the result of a traveler caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, such as during a protest-turned-riot. In fact, many of MEDEX's cases are not caused by a traveler's poor health condition or their engaging in risky activity.

"While you definitely have cases involving patients with a history of cardiac trouble or an adventure traveler who falls, there are just as many emergencies caused by factors outside of an individual's control," says Susan Torroella, COO for MEDEX. "These are situations travelers can't necessarily prevent - like your taxi getting in a car accident."

When travelers get injured in a foreign country, they can face severe financial implications and have difficulty finding quality care. Medicare does not pay for any medical expense overseas and most domestic policies will force travelers to pay upfront and then submit for their claim after returning home, if they cover overseas medical care at all. According to MEDEX experts, even when travelers are able to gather enough funds to pay for treatment, they often find themselves in facilities that are ill-prepared to diagnose or treat appropriately. Smaller Caribbean islands suffer a lack of physicians and equipment, and other popular destinations can only handle basic care. Serious injuries and conditions requiring emergency medical evacuation can cost as much as $25,000 or more to return a patient to the United States.

McGee offers this tip for travelers this year: "When you vacation in resort areas in the Caribbean or Central and South America this summer, be sure your great deal is not negated by a risk taken with your well-being. Research your destination before you go, and find a solid company from which to purchase your travel insurance policy." McGee also advises travelers to make sure the company offers more than just medical insurance, and that they can assist you during an emergency to find the right doctors and hospitals, monitor your care, assist with language barriers and provide up-front bill payment.

MEDEX Global Group Cautions: Beware of Rabies When Abroad

Baltimore, MD. (February 5, 2009) -- MEDEX Global Group reports a 240% increase in dog bite cases handled by its Emergency Response Center in 2008. This has experts concerned not just about the increase in cases, but also about the possibility that travelers might contract the deadly rabies virus from rabid wild dogs.

“Most travelers know to be wary of close contact with wild animals, such as snakes and monkeys, but many Americans forget that in some foreign countries most dogs are wild and can carry diseases,” explains Dr. Ben Koppel. As Medical Director for MEDEX, Koppel urges travelers to err on the side of caution. “Dog bites require prompt medical attention, with immediate, vigorous washing with soap and water of any wounds, followed by cleansing with an antiseptic. This then is followed by a series of five post-exposure rabies shots that need to be administered on a specific timetable. Waiting too long could cost you your life.”

Causing more than 50,000 deaths worldwide each year, rabies kills more people than polio, encephalitis, or meningitis - with almost half of the victims being children. Compounding the problem, there is a global shortage of rabies vaccines and the human or equine rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) recommended by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both products are also expensive.

“Unfortunately, the greatest difficulty in preventative or proper post-treatment exists in the countries where the vaccine and immunoglobulin are most needed,” according to Dr. Henry Wilde, MEDEX Physician Advisor and world-renowned expert on rabies and infectious diseases. Wilde urges travelers to plan ahead for the pre-exposure vaccinations regimen if they know they will be traveling to a canine rabies endemic region, particularly in Asia, Africa and parts of South America. “Most importantly, if travelers have been vaccinated, they will not need the expensive and scarce immunoglobulin (RIG) if they are bitten by an animal in a rabies endemic country,” he explains.

“Rabies as a Threat to the Traveler,” a MEDEX article authored by Dr. Wilde, can be downloaded online in .pdf format. Additional white papers and articles about medical and security risks and management for international travelers are available online using the MEDEX website white paper link.

Tough Economic Times Call For Savvy Travelers

MEDEX Global Group Advises Protecting Financial Assets & Health While Abroad

BALTIMORE, Md. (November 5, 2008) – Tough economic times should encourage travelers to plan smarter, safer trips, according to MEDEX Global Group. As individuals look for the most economical and sensible travel options, MEDEX advises vacationers and business travelers to avoid major risks and costs associated with medical emergencies while overseas.

“Nothing can put a family or business at risk like an international medical emergency,” says Bruce Kirby, CEO of MEDEX Global Group. “However, travelers can make informed decisions in advance to protect their health and financial assets.”

For as little as two dollars a day, travelers can purchase international travel insurance that covers emergency medical expenses such as hospital and physician fees, medical evacuation and emergency dental expenses. Without this coverage, travelers could be forced to max out their credit cards, tap dwindling home equities, deplete savings accounts, or suffer treatment delays.

“Too many people equate travel insurance with lost luggage and trip cancellation,” adds Kirby. “The dangers and expenses of a medical emergency far exceed the costs of lost luggage, and you can add baggage and trip coverage to most medical policies.”

Some travelers mistakenly think they already have coverage through existing policies, when they do not. These groups include people over 65 using Medicare, which does not cover overseas medical needs; business executives of small-to-mid-sized companies that may not carry group travel policies or may only cover evacuation costs; and mission-based travelers on volunteer trips through churches or other nonprofits that may not provide medical coverage.

To be a savvy, safe traveler, MEDEX recommends the following:

  • Protect your finances by investing in a travel insurance package that includes comprehensive medical and evacuation coverage.
  • Understand that protection against trip cancellation and lost baggage is a minor cost compared to emergency medical expenses. Compare policies of $50,000, $100,000 or more to protect against costly evacuations and medical fees.
  • Make sure the insurance policy includes direct payment to the medical provider. Many international facilities and practitioners require cash up-front, and prior to treatment. Policies that reimburse individuals after they return home will not help when you need immediate cash and care.
  • Ask who provides the emergency assistance included in most travel medical policies. Some insurers outsource to a 24-hour call center that may not have experience with serious medical emergencies. When you need help fast, you can’t afford delays caused by transferring calls, verifying benefits, or waiting for claims approval from a different office.
  • Research your location before you go to understand what health risks are present at your destination and where to go for quality medical treatment. Preparing before you leave can go a long way in protecting your health and your wallet.
  • Be aware that some insurance companies have been affected by the current banking crisis. While investigating insurance policies, confirm that you are working with a credible, well-established company and underwriter to avoid further risks.

Online Resource Translates Common Medical Phrases, Provides Essential Information About Prescriptions and Medications Abroad

New MEDEX 360°m Enhancements Help Travelers Avoid International Medical Crises

Baltimore, MD (September 25, 2008) – Medical directors, risk managers and study abroad administrators can now resolve potentially dangerous healthcare mistakes abroad through the use of a new online resource. “Medical Phrase Translations” and “International Drug Equivalencies” have been added to MEDEX 360°m Global Medical Monitor, a comprehensive website that provides vital and timely health risk and medical care information for specific international destinations.

Available from MEDEX Global Group, the new Medical Phrase Translation tool serves as an emergency dictionary that allows travelers to print out and bring with them 180 common medical phrases and translations in 24 different languages. By pointing to translated expressions, patients can communicate key information such as “I’m having difficulty breathing,” “I have pain in my chest,” or “I have a fever and chills,” in more than 200 countries and territories.

The new International Drug Equivalencies feature provides essential information about medications overseas. Using this online tool, travelers can search for their prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines to determine whether their medication – or a brand equivalent – is available.

“Language interpretation errors can lead to clinical mistakes in medical emergencies, and even routine prescriptions may not be available or allowed through customs in a number of countries,” says Bruce Kirby, CEO of MEDEX Global Group. “The enhanced MEDEX 360°m allows administrators to arm their travelers with important tools to overcome these issues so their people can receive the quality care they need, when they need it.”

Created in partnership with Harvard Medical International, MEDEX 360°m Global Medical Monitor is the most robust and comprehensive online medical resource available today, providing MEDEX members with information for 236 countries and territories around the world, such as:

  • Immunization requirements and recommendations
  • The quality and availability of local care, including the names of recommended hospitals
  • Health alerts and updates
  • A unique one-to-five medical risk rating system reporting the primary concerns of each country

MEDEX 360°m Global Medical Monitor is currently available to all corporate, scholastic, USAID and government clients. To learn more, visit http://www.medex360m.com or call (877) 654-3310.

Study Abroad Programs Present Educational Opportunities and Hidden Risks

As Students Gear Up for Back-to-School, Parents and Administrators Must Ensure Safe Semesters Abroad

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 27, 2008) — An unprecedented number of students are participating in study abroad programs this semester and they are choosing to study in more remote and diverse locations than ever before. This trend is increasing the demand these students have for adequate medical and security resources.

MEDEX Global Group, a travel assistance and medical and security evacuation company has noticed a significant uptick in the problems that students are facing when they travel abroad. MEDEX reports a 53% increase in the number of countries where 18 to 23-year olds have required emergency assistance when comparing the first half of this year to just two years ago (from 49 to 75 countries). Approximately one in five medical cases required inpatient treatment versus outpatient care, according to MEDEX data from January through June of 2008. Many of these cases occurred in countries where well-trained medical staff is scarce and local standards for cleanliness are questionable. In other locations, foreigners are often targeted by criminals and security issues may arise amidst volatile political landscapes.

A recent report from the Institute of International Education found that more than 223,000 Americans are currently studying abroad — a record number that educators expect to see double by the end of the decade. They are also noticing that study abroad programs in China, Africa, and the Middle East are becoming increasingly popular. While these destinations are rich in cultural opportunity, they can present a number of challenges in the event of a medical or security emergency. According to MEDEX Global Group Director of Client Relations, David Mair, many scholastic administrators have to look for more sophisticated preparation strategies and more elaborate comprehensive medical and security programs for their students.

MEDEX Global Group, which provides medical and security services to many of the nation’s top schools and universities, recommends that parents and students look for the following components in a study abroad program and insurance package:

  • Destination intelligence services that will provide students with the latest information and guidance about health considerations, personal security concerns, and social or political instability.
  • A list of pre-screened hospitals and other medical providers verified to have quality diagnostic and treatment options meeting international standards for care.
  • Multilingual, 24/7 travel assistance services that can help students when they experience any travel, medical or security emergency.
  • Evacuation coverage, up to $100,000 or more, for emergency medical, security and political evacuations. Also look for the bedside companion benefit that pays for a family member to join a loved one who is hospitalized and alone.
  • Medical insurance that will provide coverage for international emergencies and even routine medical care performed outside of the U.S. Examine the fine print to make sure that there are no exclusions related to drugs, alcohol and suicide ― these exclusions may exist in programs that are not specifically designed for students.

“Nobody plans to break a bone or to spend their semester in the middle of a war zone ― but it can happen. Just ask the student who fell off of the Great Wall of China, or those who were caught in Beirut when bombs started to fall,” said Bruce Kirby, CEO of MEDEX Global Group. “Parents and school administrators share the concern and responsibility for the wellbeing of their students, so naturally they want to arm their students with everything they need to stay safe and healthy.”

Increase in Travel to China Creating New Health and Security Risks

New China White Paper from MEDEX Global Group Offers Tips for Travelers

Baltimore, MD (April 23, 2008) — Infectious disease, poor sanitary conditions and substandard healthcare are among the serious medical concerns found in China, according to a new white paper recently released by MEDEX Global Group, a worldwide provider of international travel, security and medical insurance.

“This year, China expects 150 million foreign tourists, which is a 14 percent increase over 2007,” said Bruce Kirby, CEO of MEDEX Global Group. “This paper is intended to prepare the rapidly growing number of travelers for the unexpected by arming them with well-documented, critical health information.”

“What You Should Know Before Traveling Abroad: Health and Security Risks in China” captures the results from a series of 300-point, onsite evaluations of medical care and health facilities throughout China. To compile the evaluation, MEDEX experts examined a variety of factors including the country’s quality of healthcare, blood supply and disease risks. The full report is available for free download at www.medexassist.com/travelguides.

Overall, on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the lowest rating, MEDEX gave China a score of “4”. Training for doctors and nurses may not be up to international standards, and in rural areas of China, medical care is more rudimentary than in urban areas. Hospitals may not have modern equipment or even plumbing. In fact, only 28% of the population in rural China has access to adequate sanitation facilities.

The MEDEX report offers a number of health and medical-related tips for travelers:

  • In case of emergency in China, private clinics are recommended over public hospitals. Public hospitals are overcrowded, patients will likely wait hours and most often payment is expected in cash and prior to admission. Foreign health insurance plans are not accepted.
  • Ambulances are not reliable in an emergency. Private transportation, even in an emergency, is often the fastest alternative.
  • Blood supply in China is not safe. The AIDS virus is a significant concern in China and there is a risk of exposure to unsafe blood and blood products.
  • Six to eight weeks before leaving for China, visit a travel clinic to receive necessary vaccinations, including: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies and the flu vaccine.

Upon entering China, all visitors are required to complete a Health Declaration Form to notify authorities of any existing health conditions. Travelers with certain infectious diseases may not be permitted to enter the country.

Additional details and rankings are included as part of MEDEX 360°m Global Medical Monitor reports, a medical information service created in partnership with Harvard Medical International. It provides the most robust and comprehensive online medical resource available on China as well as 236 other countries and territories.
